What happens in the play?
- The Houses of Montague and Capulet are engaged in a bitter and violent feud. When fighting erupts in the streets, Prince Escalus promises dire consequences if it should happen again.
- Romeo is lovesick over his “love”, Rosaline. To cheer him up, his friends convince him to crash a party at the Capulets.
- At the party, Romeo meets Juliet, and they fall hopelessly in love. Tybalt is insulted by Romeo’s presence at the party and vows revenge.
- Friar Laurence, in hopes of ending the feud between the families, agrees to marry Romeo to Juliet.
- In the aftermath of a second street brawl, Romeo is banished from Verona.
- Lord Capulet plans to have Juliet marry the County Paris. To avoid this, Juliet drinks a sleeping potion provided by the Friar to fake her death until Romeo can return.
- The Friar’s letter explaining this plot to Romeo cannot be sent and therefore Romeo believes his love to be dead. He returns to Verona to be with her.
- Violence, love, miscommunication, and tragedy ensue.
